Crusades and inquisitions and witch trials. Seems to me the Christians were always pretty high strung right up to that post-prohibition era you mentioned. It's entirely possible that Jews were engaging in all sorts of similar shenanigans that I just haven't heard about and then again the comparison may be unfair since the Jews rarely had much power to abuse.
You're right about Israel too. I grew up in a school district with a very high Jewish population and a considerable portion of those had parents from Israel. The American Jewish parents were awesome and a great place for a sleepover. The Israeli Jewish parents were straight up terrifying individuals. But that wasn't a religious thing. A lot of the Israelis we less devout than the American Jews.
