the fourth crusade was a venetian folly. by destroying the roman empire she set up her own demise. as the ottomans grew in strength from the ashes of the byzantines, they chipped away at venetian ships. with their loss she lost the ability to defend herself when napoleon ended the most serene republic. was it all just chance, or was it god's vengeance?
