Well, God was wrathful, spiteful, vengeful, and all manner of other things reminiscent of a petulant child. Up until Jesus came along, when all of a sudden he's now this nice guy who turns the other cheek and forgives.
Which brings up another question. What was so special about Jesus? He said he was the son of God - plenty other people claimed that; heck, in church the other day, the priest said that we "all are God's children". He had lots of followers - so have others. He died for his/our sins - again, lots of people have been killed for their beliefs. And, he was resurrected - according to Christianity, aren't all of us resurrected and brought to heaven after we die?
So, factually speaking, how is Jesus any different from any of the rest of us?
