The whole thing is being blown out of proportion. They've only managed to raise $50K after 20 or so assemblies. The who idea appears to be a resounding failure, but it's a nice headline so the news has been covering it.

Atheism is an important belief that heavily alters the way people see the world, it is natural they want community. However they need more than atheism to form a community, they need moral coherence, traditions, rituals ect (aka religion without god).

It's not surprising craft unions and churches were focal points for much social activity in past ages, but both have declined in relevancy as human society has developed into a more alienating environment for individuals. being able to identify with an association helps.
As The Comrade said atheists desire community too. Really all people do. I think this is good and other interest groups and associations should follow suit. It would probably enhance individual community involvement as well. These kinds of groups keep the public informed about local issues in a way the media just doesn't seem to do anymore.
