I think exploration is pretty much the best thing government has ever done.
Dept of Homeland Security...an agency that shouldn't even exist, has a budget 4 times larger than NASA's. So I'm really not worried about NASA spending.

the moon is the launching point for all further exploration. we need to be proactive in establishing something permanent there.

I dont see the Moon as a launching point - We really need a reason to go other than sheer curiosity. I would much rather see coin going into expanded Martian exploration

Ya, I've always kinda looked at the moon as just one more gravity well to waste fuel on escaping.

I think the point is having a place where we can organize things in space, that's close to home relativistically. When you colonized the new world you didn't head straight for Nebraska. You started at the coast.

Thing is though that it isn't "in space". A moon base would be on the ground.
Better to set a large space station up out at L5 if we want a deep space jumping off point.
