Here is the question. If to the death gladiator games were legal and could be televised, would that rise to among the highest ratings for any tv show in history? If so, would you find it disturbing?

How can we judge your question. We would need a paradigm shift in society to first allow gladiatorial death matches and then to allow them to be televised. Basically we are too far removed from such a society for us to ever to be able to predict that society or how it would react to certain stimulus.

To answer your question though, no people would riot and destroy the set, cameras etc. It would be disturbing but would never happen.

If the contestants were volunteers, I would have no moral qualms with it. Other than greater stakes, it is no different from fighting for show in the MMA or whatever.

I would, however, not watch it.

It might be cool if the matches were interesting enough. For example, the richest man in the world, against the poorest man in the world for all the cash. If you are going to be grotesquely wealthy, you are going to have to fight to keep it. Another good one would be, the presidents of two countries who are talking shit to each other. Also traffic disputes could be solved this way. You want to go 30 in the passing lane? Well now you're going to get curbstomped on TV.
