To follow up, even this punishment may be excessive, since no one disputes that he didn't mean to bring it. But, while the punishment may be excessive, I don't think he should have not been punished at all.
Yeah, it sucks and it's not fair. But, when you drive someone else's car, you are responsible for it. I got a ticket when I was 16 and had just gotten my license. Why? Expired brake tag. Was it my fault? Nope. Did the ticket go on my record? Yup.

well i don't think you should be punished at all. i dont see a problem with bringing sissors, or knives, or guns to school. using them as a weapon against other people is when you start punishing them. if they want to have a trap-shooting club at school, they should. and a knife? come on now. it's a knife. cars are far more deadly and dangerous things to bring to school
