Malthus lived long before modern industrial farming techniques using chemical fertilizers existed. That data is no good.
The fact is there are people starving because of the inequitable and wasteful method of distribution currently being used by human society. A large part of the reason half of the food produced in the world is wasted is because distributors would rather let rot on the dock than possibly cause unfavorable market conditions for their position. The other part of the reason is simply poor logistics due to the ad hoc and unplanned nature of "free market economics". We already have the technical potential to have a post-scarcity society. We just aren't using it because it would remove a little game we like to play from the picture called "My dog is bigger than your dog".
So for the sake of preserving the game of interpersonal power dynamics millions will starve. This is an ill-conceived way to go about doing things.
