Knowing what I know, I wouldn't free any slaves I owned if I inherited them whilst slavery were still legal.
I would instead pay the going rate for their labour into bank accounts set up on their behalf to be turned over to them when slavery was outlawed and they were freed, and when that happened, I would offer to continue employing them on a voluntary basis.
