the issues of sharia and jihadism are entrenched in islamic culture. they didn't just appear in the 1960s out of the blue. many parts of the world never got over them and some parts they were just contained locally by colonial powers but it was NEVER gone. afghanistan is a perfect example of this. to say that economics drove this change is a flat out distortion of history. the only relevance the west had on fueling arab extremism was the failures of egyptian leaders who were westernized to improve the region, most of which had to do with the string of defeats handed to them by israel.
