Not only is this peasant given a cellphone, they are given all the requisite knowledge to use it. They also have the same understanding of how it works as the average modern person.
Do they benefit from it?

What if a useful shit was left on the phone, like world history in the 1600's, maps on where to find teh gold, blueprints to build a better gun or the combustion engine

You'd have all sorts of useful stuff. Cameras, docs, calculators, flashlight, dictionary (you could glean more knowledge from that). But would that person be able to reverse engineer it? Could they derive new tech from the phone?
