I lived for a bit in New Zealand as a child and I much preferred their teaching and discipline style to those in the U.S. Inside the classroom it was a very disciplined environment and there was extensive tracking meaning you were separated into groups for the majority of the class so you were constantly being challenged. It was very easy to move from group to group with any intelligence. Discipline inside the classroom was swift and harsh.
Outside on the playground it was a free for all, rugby, soccer, fights ect. There was pretty much no monitoring. Makes kids smart and strong.
In the U.S. elementary school there is little tracking (1 day a month GATE was all advanced students could get), discipline inside the classroom was poor, kids not doing work, not paying attention. On the playground there were so many rules it was ridiculous.
