confirmation bias has always existed, but nothing reinforces it more than when people you actually know hold the same opinion as you. instead of some guy you don't know penning an op-ed in the paper confirming your dumb opinion, social media allows you to reinforced your bias x1000. combine that with a desire to ride trends and fit in and you have the current hivemind we're experiencing.
