As Eynon has said in the past, these types of things are rarely one sided. Rarely is one side SOLELY at fault. If a cop asks you for ID, you give it to him. It's his legal right to ask for ID.
That said, once the Captain had "shown" him his ID (even though he didn't "give" it), the cop should have backed off. Cop should have said, "Oh, sorry Captain. Someone reported a possible burglar, and I was checking it out. I really apologize for the intrusion. Would you mind handing my your ID so that I can call the dispatch and straighten this out? Won't be but a few minutes." Instead, he escalated it needlessly. 95% fault of the cop.
