I'd call myself "conservative, with a pragmatic twist". If the definition of "conservative" means minimal government intrusion, I'm conservative both socially, fiscally and politically (ie: relating to affairs of state).
A good "rule of thumb" for me is that the government cannot tell a woman what to do with her own body (abortion, prostitution, etc.), cannot tell people whom they may marry, cannot take money from one to give to another (beyond certain needed programs, like Medicaid or food stamps; for instance, reduced farming subsidies, reduced bailouts, etc.), and cannot interfere within the internal matters of a foreign state. But, pragmatic enough to know that certain things which may "go against my general beliefs" are needed for a functioning society.
