I don't think the possibility is that fantastical. The demographics of the US are changing so rapidly, and the Republican states are becoming so out of touch with reality, that I could honestly see a secessionist movement starting up again. I'm guessing that, like all events of this magnitude, the spark will come from an event that is seemingly unimportant and small, but it will rapidly spiral out of control, ala the start of WWI.

ex is probably on to something. if there is a revolt it'll probably come from the right. they can articulate a position (as flawed as it is) at least.
