maybe a micrometeor strike took out the transponder and depressurized the cabin, leaving the plane to fly until running out of fuel and dropping into the ocean.

Apparently it looks like the tracking device on the plane was deliberately disabled. It then could have traveled for 7 further hours. Meaning it could be anywhere from Kazakhstan to the bottom of the Indian ocean

this entire episode is bizarre
so, because of where thesatelite was and how long it took to ping the thing, at 8:11am it was somewhere along the red line
which, looks mostly like over land, provided that it didn't do another u turn and go south.
