There's value, even for the flowery stuff. Its just one of those facets of the thing where the cultural and artistic can shine through. There is elegance and strength behind well worded pieces. Read pretty much anything written by John Adams, Abigail Adams, or Jefferson. Then compare it to the best efforts of politicos today. And they were mostly writing each other informal letters!

The language doesn't need to be a minimalist technical document. It can be something artfully crafted and appreciated for that value, as opposed to a line of HTML.

wilson's speeches are near indistinguishable from g dubya's, even if wilson the man was more of a scholar than bush. i think that's more a consequence of their office than anything else

This thread has predictably gone the direction of test taking instead of intentional development. The point to keeping words that are not often used is the exposure to alternative ways of developing thought and expressing it. f**k test taking, this is literally about the preservation of a healthy community made up of humans who are capable of thinking new thoughts, not using someone elses stupidity to solve an original interpersonal issue.
