I don't know if legally the NBA can force him to sell.. BUT they may be able to force him to 'voluntarily' sell the team by fining him, suspending him, and restricting what he can do they'd be making his ownership a living hell..

Well looks like they banned him for life and fined him 2.5m.
The fine is nothing, he makes that much in a week or two. I am not sure how much of an impact the ban will have. Hopefully Sterling sells but it is likely he will remain a resentful and bitter owner. However if player, coaches, GMs don't want to work for him it might destroy the value of the team so he might be better off selling.
