Met with the guy who is in charge of advanced manufacturing for John Deere at an engineering conference. Some nerdy guy from a fancy school asked him about demographics, like what BRIC are you targeting, I happily interjected and pointed out that Russia was where they are targeting due to low population density (big farms, big equipment) and need for low maintenance equipment.

Rewarded with a "perfect, exactly perfect".

Maybe you ought to get into demographics. It is a pretty huge industry and is increasingly important, as opinions and tastes diverge and become significantly less uniform across most industries.

Oh, you will, especially if you decide to invent something useful. In which case understanding demographics and how to market stuff will save you a shit ton of money, as these are things many engineers have to hire other people to do, because they just don't get it.

Before my dad took over the family business, he went to school for engineering (just for shits and giggles - can you imagine being able to do that these days?). He has an awful time getting into the marketing mindset. If you can do both, you will do very, very well.
