A few days out from the finale, I'm hearing more and more people saying that the ending of True Detective sucked and the series has blown its credibility cause they couldn't end the story right. The complaints seem misplaced to me. This show wasn't a mystery novel. I never imagined the payoff of the show being about catching the shadowy bad guy. The whole thing was about the two main characters and how their experiences changed them over time. It's obviously also a pretty blatant commentary on human existence, which again doesn't require us to see them take down some massive conspiracy. Further, why would viewers want it to just be a given that the protagonists will always wrap everything up neatly in the end? How is it enjoyable to have that kind of foregone conclusion from the jump?

Anyway what are your thoughts?

I liked it, although of the eight, it wasn't the best episode.

I def loved their decision to have a Cormac McCarthy style ending where not everything goes the good guys way when the issues get resolved. To me this is def a more realistic ending then wrapping everything nice and clean. As Marty said, "we got our guy, and that's the best you can hope for." They know they didn't get everyone, but they got "their guy". Excellent show, and since it's an anthology series, looking for to see who they get for season.

it was a good ending. was better than if they would have died, was better than PLOTTWIST ITS SOMEONE ELSE ENTIRELY. but... they did wrap it up. they caught the guy. the conspiracy was exposed, they caught him, and then the lovable nihilist rust has some sort of come to jesus experience (probably from his drug abuse and lack of oxygen to the brain) but for all the disturbing things it discussed about humanity (microwaves? come the f**k on) it ended up trying to be uplifting

Let's not forget the title of the show and how Marty and Rust did some kickass detectiving to find that nut. In the beginning Rust was the one doing the real leg work, but Marty showed his skills towards the end, much to Rust's amazement.
