Let's say you are a Russian politician or know one with knowledge of Russia's intentions to raise tension in the region and then back off.

You know that the act would cause a massive sell off of stocks, but then the prices would rise again once the situation cools. Would it be considered insider trading if you acted on this knowledge? They do have non-public knowledge, but that knowledge isn't related to any specific company.

Do you think the Russians are buying US stocks in this fashion?

the russian mob is into all kinds of stuff and and I presume they are in contact with Russian intelligence so it wouldn't really surprise me that much if some stuff along those lines has occurred.

i think they are occupied with buying up gold and stockpiling it at the moment, though
