I was walking back to my apartment from the center of downtown Kansas City (I live just a bit over). There is a concert by the local "alternative" station, I believe it is called "Buzz Prom." (96.5 The Buzz) I saw flocks of hipsters headed that way and I was wondering just why the hell so many of them insist on wearing these ugly assed loafers without socks. Now, I would never consider myself a dedicated follower of fashion, to use the Kinks' phrase... but what the f**k?!

In my high school days those were worn by the Sporto clique in Sporto hall. I was a freak and in freak hall we wore Colorados (hiking boot popular with us in 1982). If you watch Breakfast Club you know of what I speak. The writer/director John Hughes went to my high School.

boat shoes are comfortable and honestly socks are the god damn devil. unless you wear shoes as tight as a vice not wearing socks won't make your feet get gross or blister.

I have worn shoes without socks. I don't like it. My feet feel slimy.

but i disagree about socks. socks are amazing. and if you do physical activity in the shoes you will get blisters without socks

It isn't the boat shoes that bother me, probably tack it up there to the lack of socks. My shoes are $20 Avias. Not all that picky, but I wear god damn socks

Don't see the appeal of loafers/boat shoes, either

i will say that my father has never worn socks with his boat shoes which he's worn forever so i don't think it's odd. i usually wear socks with mine though
