I'm partial to Robinson but it's come to my attention shitlibs are pushing Peters. One thing I think we can all agree with though is that the rampant use of the mercator protection is one of the most widespread instances of willful ignorance in human history.

The projection debate is so unbelievably overwrought. Mercator lived in the 16th century and was trying to turn a 3D spherical thing into a 2D rectangular thing. It distorts distance from the equator equally, north and south, as a function of simple geometry. Its not a conspiracy, racism, or whatever other shrill nonsense gets shouted about it.

every single 2d map projection i've seen is distorted or is so f**k up to make everything proportioned properly it negates the purpose of a map to begin with which is the easy comparison of coordinates/places of the world to each other on a smaller scale.
