I think they still use seashells in parts of Africa for currency too. That probably works great for them on the small scale but if they were to try that outside of the area, most people would not value the shells enough to exchange money for shells.

centralization. global currency.
the whole "creds" idea from most scifi.
not decentralized, barely regulated currencies.

I can think of an example of a country giving up the right to set monetary policy to join a larger currency bloc that did not involve aliens.

If you mean the EU they are having a lot of problems with the Euro right now simply because they each have their own monetary policy.
