When it comes to technology, I'm the opposite of Menson. My twelve-year-old daughter has her own MacBook, iMac, iPhone and iPad. She has cable even in her room. I often borrow her six-year-old half sister, over the years she's got hand me down iPads and computers. She uses an old MacPro G5. When I buy a pallet of computers at an auction, my daughter helps me categorize them, test them and she does a lot of the operating system installation.
Her school uses iPads. All her books are on it. She can check out books from the library using it. I'm always finding her reading. "Just one more chapter, please?" is common. We have a few four wheelers but she's not allowed to ride them. Sometimes, I let her drive the Mule or she can use the golf cart if she stays on the paths. At her age, I was driving tractors. I got my "Farm Driver's License" on my fourteenth birthday.
Kids today, grow up much faster in some ways but independence isn't one of them. We were far more independent. Remember summertime, where we would leave the house in the morning and not come in until the lights came on?
