The 2 leading causes of crime are extreme poverty and mental illness and our government routinely ignores both, choosing instead to pay-lip service to gun control. Gun reform is fine, but it is pointless without taking on the issues that actually cause people to go out and commit crimes.

Obama is probably one of the best gun salesman in America's history.

Crime level is probably linked to people's lack of access to the cookie jar. Well, that and a fkd up drug policy.

There's a great interview in the new RS with the author of The Cartel, Don Winslow, where he makes one of the best arguments I've heard about how things like Ferguson are the direct result of our eternally failing drug war.

It's not online, so I'll have to go home and get it for tomorrow, but think about it: it really does make a lot of sense. What has had a more devastating effect on the black community (besides the economy/education problems) than the War on Drugs? And what has been the vehicle by which we've started to "militarize" the police (think of all those drug raids you see on "Dallas SWAT" or the other ones--most of them are drug raids)? Now we have the War on Terror as an even further excuse.
