up, slightly, and this was because of changes to deductions. i was deduction heavy and i lost some of that. if i was using standard deduction all along it would have been a pretty nice cut.

Up. Deductions are what f**k us. We have a fairly high state income tax here, since no sales tax, and also found that the tax shelter from investment properties we own has developed some big holes. SALT deduction shenanigans. Also, my mother is a dependent, and I need to ask the tax guy exactly what changed on that, but apparently that had some sort of an effect. Wasn't a problem in previous years.
