that said i'll join you in it. when i installed a water softener i flux and soldered it all with some lovely pipe work. i'm proud of it, especially because you can see my pipe work near the pipe work of professionals and it is night and day between the two and shows how little they actually give a shit. solder drips and shit all over the place. pipes that are wonky. and then there's mine, that beautiful copper at straight angles. i had to cross over and in front of one pipe so i went with a beautiful 45 degree changeover and it just looks so nice. most stunning part of my whole maintenance room

Same is true of boat work. You can pay some tech at the yard $100/hour to do barely adequate (the boat won't literally sink...not right away anyhow) work below the waterline...or you can just do it yourself, correctly, at a 90% savings, and actually feel good about it.
It's just a matter of how much time you've got available to do things yourself, and how much your time is worth.
