yes you have to prove it was a lie, they knew it was a lie, it was intended with actual malice not just that it incidentally hurt someone, and it must actually hurt someone. all of that is no small feat to overcome

Honestly it's a good thing that defamation has a high bar. As litigious as the US is, if it were easy to nail someone with defamation just handling the caseload would probably consume 25% of our GDP.
