I don't know if it is possible anymore with the current state of the GOP.. BUT I hope Rubio is simply following Nixon's advice that for a Republican to make a successful run at the WH he must run to the right before and during the primaries, BUT then move to the center during the general election..
Rommey never moved to the center.. And it killed him.. But again with the current loonies running the GOP maybe it would be worse for these front runners to move to the middle. These guys have to follow lock step in line with the party agenda, or they will be cast off..
Look at the hate Christie endured from his own party when he dared to thank the anti-Christ currently in the WH for his help after Sandy.
