I believe that religious education as in the UK is great and also one of the likely candidates for the UK's general secular attitudes.
As far as religion and all ideology for that matter. It is something of a neutral vessel. It really does have to do with the people engaging it and how they do so. Taking Christianity, you can get on the one hand, liberation theology and Dorothy Day and on the other hand, you can get fascism and General Franco and then everything in between. The same is true of Islam (progressive Sunni's and extremist Wahhabi's) and all religion and also true of any secular ideology.
I do believe that teaching children to believe things without good reason and to do so as an adult is problematic and potentially dangerous.
