No denying it, we targeted and killed civilians, as did they. And, no, that's not an excuse.
But, contrast these numbers.
German civilians killed in WW2 = 1.1 million
German soldiers killed in WW2 = 5.5 million
N. Vietnamese citizens killed in Vietnam Action = 65,000
N. Vietnamese combatants killed in Vietnam Action = 1.1 million
In other words, 16.7% of all Germans killed in WW2 were civilians. Contrast that with only 5.6% of all N. Vietnamese killed were citizens.
Again, I'm not saying it was "OK" to kill 65,000 civilians. But, it's undeniable that we have gotten MUCH better at only killing enemy combatants and not citizens. Our ability to totally protect all citizens has not been realized, and probably never will be. But, we're getting better.
