Calling people gay, honey, sugar, etc. at certain workplaces, even if in good fun, can create a hostile work environment, right or wrong. It sucks, but best to play it safe when working at a place where there are lots of people to potentially offend. As for simply giving an opinion on a topic such as gay marriage or a religion, then that is completely different. People should know if they ask an nihilistic atheist about his thoughts on Islam or other religions what his response is likely to be. Me losing my job because I tell someone in casual convo that all religions are a crock is thought crime 101. The problem with Islam in particular is that liberals conflate thinking that all Muslims are terrorist and any constructive criticism about Islam and Muslims as the same thing. Thinking they are all terrorists is a bigoted view, plenty of sound Muslims out there who are good people. Pointing out that their religion is shit and counter-intuitive to anything socially liberal is not bigoted in the slightest. In the US we criticize Christian Republicans for doing this exact thing. Why not socially conservative Muslims too?
