Should it be legal for children to be taught basic skills?

According to http://www.crimelibrary.com/criminal_mi ... ing/2.html, less than 100 kids are "kidnapped" each year. I put quotes, because that 100 represents just the normal type of kidnapping we think of - stranger, white van, no windows, candy, chloroform, etc. That's out of 800,000 reported missing kids (400k = runaways, 200k = family custody issues, 150k = "other").

There is a young woman I used to work with who fits that type of description. Her mom (who I also worked with at the time) would take her to the doctor for every little thing. So not only is she incredibly rebellious and somewhat naive, she has no immune system.

Honestly, how f**k up is the US ?

The idea that kids walking a mile in an area they know well is some sort of emergency is just completely foreign to me. Why on earth wouldn't they ? I grew up in Copenhagen, and I walked or bicycled to friends/school/stores all the time, and noone ever looked at me twice, because everyone does this. We're not talking about babies here, a 10-year old is more than capable of walking for 15 minutes to get somewhere.
