Let's say that a properly nuanced balance can't be achieved, and you are left with the extremes: law enforcement being befuddled by encryption, or real encryption not existing without a workaround. Which would you prefer?
Given the overwhelming blows that privacy has taken over the years, I'd prefer the former over the latter. Having some criminals or terrorists avoid persecution is terrible, but denying technological privacy is worse (over the long run).

I have trouble believing that our government doesn't have tools that can already break most forms of encryption (especially after all the Snowden leaks). There are a number of attacks that can occur on a device, especially iPhones. Even better if you have access to said device.
This all feels like a big play on behalf of the FBI (make every think the FBI is incompetent when really they are not)...or something....I'm not sure exactly.
