Huntsman would have lost, too. He's arguably more right than Romney on fiscal matters despite not being socially insane.
The problem with the GOP is not just social policy, it's economic policy. And until they fix that problem, it won't matter who they nominate unless the economy is tanking at the time. G5000 showed one example right above of such bad economic policy by Huntsman. As long as the party wants to cut things like social safety nets, social security, and medicare for people while not providing real solutions for these problems other than "you're on your own," all the while ramping up the war machine, they have no chance. Not anymore.
Their horrid economic and social policies are the problem, not the color or social status or gender or "coolness" of their electorate. They don't offer anything economically to anyone not well off and they offer nothing socially to anyone who isn't racist/bigoted and/or isn't into sexual issues being a part of the conversation or accepts science as reality.
Regarding this poll, the fact that you can change the ACORN part to Aliens, as ueber points out, is the very point of the poll. Ueber, you're making the argument why the poll works as you argue it doesn't. That is the intent. It shows that a lot of the GOP is so unwilling to self-reflect that anything and everything is at fault but their ideas.
As I made a thread the other week after the election, the problem with the GOP is the ideas of the party. This is another example that they don't get it, yet.
