Honestly it's a poor political tactic and a poor negotiation tactic. It's quite obvious that assault rifles are a charged issue, so the very second you start advocating to ban them, people are just going to shut down. It's a non-starter. And when you talk about gun control again, non-starter. Nobody can publicly argue against gun safety and training. That's what people should be calling it and advocating for. A lot of firearm owners are actually super weary and safety conscious because they know it's a lethal weapon.
If you start talking about addressing the underlying issues (damn if somebody would have focused on mental healthcare instead of stupid rifles after Sandy Hook we could have actually did something good instead of being mired down in rhetoric.) then you can get people on board to solve issues where everybody agrees that there needs to be a solution.
