Part of it is conservative insistence that there be a gun for every person in America and basically no limits on the type of weapon you can own. I get why cops want to be armed with military style weaponry when many civilians can access such weaponry with basically no meaningful background check whatseover.

The militarization of Police as been a on going process since the "War on Terror" began.
Police departments have got all kinds of toys left over from Iraq and Afghanistan, might as well as try em' out on the citizenry.

What happens when you can't find enough people willing to do the job, with all the additional restrictions, scrutiny and general disdain? You call 9-1-1 and they don't come?
