Oh cmon you cannot compare Desert Storm to WWII now.
You're right about how it was run and the opportunity. Funny, ain't it, that to throw them out of Kuwait we assembled this massive multi-national force of 750,000 but when President Cheney decided to invade and occupy the entire country of Iraq he decided that we only needed <200,000 and got rid of the general who said otherwise.
But to your point, back then we had competent people running the country and the military and you sure as f*** didn't have the Vice President (Dan Quayle!) sticking his hand in everything and bequeathing the whole operation to his BFF, the definition-of-incompetent Rummy.
Unfortunately we seem to have a history of fighting wars and then having no plan for after them and Desert Storm was no different as we encouraged people in Iraq to lead an uprising against Saddam but completely abandoned them, leaving them to be slaughtered. With Iraq it was even more scary because CLEARLY there was no plan beyond: let's go blow shit up and then we'll be greeted as liberators and democracy will just happen, because inside every A-rab is an American dyin' to get out, dontcha know.
