The civil war is just one in a long list of outlets for overwrought provincialism that exists like a cancer in the less learned regions of the country. It's not particularly unique other than it being a very well rounded issue... they fought a war, they lost a war, and they've managed to finagle a vague grey area out of it philosophically that at least in passing seems to dodge the preservation of slavery as the main reason why they were fighting.
