Nah, Boehner and Obama talked before. In fact, they talked during the fiscal cliff negotiations and then so did Biden and McConnell (which set up the actual deal). Boehner even tried to bring back a Grand Bargain and his party refused it.
In order to retain his speakership, Boehner had to promise the GOP Caucus he wouldn't talk to the White House at all about anything. Literally. And it happened. Think about how ridiculous a proposition that is. The GOP is so radical that even talking to Obama would be warrant for removal of leadership status.
Hilariously, the House demanded the Senate pass a budget this year or agree to not being paid or something dumb. So, the Senate passed a budget in April and have now 18 times requested conference on the budget. You know, so the House and Senate can negotiate on the budget? The GOP has refused every time. There's been no conference (which makes their 11th hour attempt at one even more hilarious).
But then you have people on this forum and elsewhere trying to argue the GOP has compromised (we won't kill you, just beat you to a bloody pulp) and talk about how both sides are the problem.
No, the problem is the GOP and only the GOP.
