MRAs shouldn't have to exist, but unfortunately a large number of feminists are hostile to any attempt to address male issues. They feel it is a distraction from bigger problems and assume the worst about anyone talking about this stuff. So what happens is that people who are perfectly on board with what women want to do - close the pay gap, protect women's reproductive rights, etc. - are driven away and made to resent feminists.
To give an example, a professor who wrote a number of alright books about male issues came to Toronto to give a lecture at UoT. A couple feminist groups came together to protest his speech, then pulled the fire alarm to prevent it from happening.
Next thing you know, the people who gathered are assuming the worst about feminists. Theories and beliefs that would never otherwise succeed start being promulgated. This is what happens to a house divided. Gender equality is the goal, so pursuing it divided along the lines of gender doesn't make any sense.
Let's resolve the incredibly horrible shit being done to fathers by the courts. Let's increase funding to women's shelters, rape kit initiatives, education, etc. Let's talk about male violence, and start dedicating a bit of time to the incredible amounts of female-on-male violence never spoken of and actually normalized by the media.
Feminism can't advance because it is holding itself back. Saying it is obsolete is the truth, and growing discontentment with the feminist movement among males and females alike shows that. Women who embody the feminist dream of 30 years ago don't even think about themselves as feminists - and when asked about it, they'll actually reject the label.
Pursuing female goals exclusively is good strategy when you're growing - now that feminism has matured, it is the time to diversify. Men are ready to take the next step, as equals, which means you'll have to deal with our shit as much as we deal with yours.
