To be fair, there were quite a few people talking about the inadequate occupation planning before the war even started. Many of them were forced out of government, cobwebbed into shitty, unimportant jobs, or mocked and dismissed by high-level pricks like Cheney.
Politicians don't often "lie" these days. They just obfuscate, refuse to answer, omit the truth, etc. Only the really shitty ones, who have bad PR people, get caught in lies.
Also, the occupation could have been a success. Really, it could have. With proper planning and the political will to think in the long-term, both Afghanistan and Iraq could have been made into better countries.
