we're not getting off this rock anytime soon. which means the best we can hope for is a mini-dark age followed by a downward adjustment.
if we can keep antibiotics and birth-control in tact things should be pretty swell after this adjustment.
this is actually the back story in star-trek btw.

It's the back story in more than a few.
Reading Starship Troopers (excellent book; movie was meh, at best) and you get the idea that Western civilization collapsed at some point, not due to war.
