Well remember we ultimately picked off OBL without killing one civilian (at least outside the compound) and we did it right in the middle of a populated area so the whole idea that we had to invade and occupy an entire country now just seems bizarre.
We also got Ramzi Yousef the old-fashioned way too--we didn't invade and occupy Pakistan (where he was--what a surprise) to get him either.
The more we look back on this the more I think it's true that Cheney just wanted a war--or two--and he quickly got bored with Afghanistan after a month or so (with Rummy whining "There's no good targets there!") so then they turned their eyes to Iraq. And then Libya, and Syria and of course Iran.
