Something to be born in mind about solar power is that its carbon intensive. The manufacture of solar panels releases more carbon than the panels themselves save throughout their nominal lifetimes. They are extremely inefficient. These big mirror based power stations though, with the molten sodium loops, can be fairly excellent...but again your talking about a tremendous carbon outlay to get started.

Nuclear really is the cleanest and safest, all things considered.

Yes nuclear is certainly a clean option.

I really liked the solar roads option and think that could be a planet-changer.

We invented things like space travel, the Internet and iPhones, PCs... I refuse to believe this isn't a technological problem we could crack and change the world with our solution.

Well...first we'd need a Cold War style enemy to symbolically defeat with said solution. Isn't going to happen out of altruism.

Plus...we'd actually need to give a shit for real instead of in words.
