Yeah, we should all be outraged at this. Guess how many corporations, since 1983, have done something to purposefully move their tax burden overseas? My guess was in the neighborhood of 1/2%, or 0.005. After all, there are over 18 million business in the US. That'd be 90,000. Perhaps that was a bit optimistic, I then thought. Let's say it was 0.0005, or 1/20 of a percent. That'd be 9000 companies. Yeah, that sounds about right. So, that was my "official answer".
Anyone want to hazard a guess?
Well, let me save you some trouble. It's 76. Yup, since 1983, only 76 companies have done this. That's 0.00042%, or 1/250,000. So, for every company that DOES move its operations overseas, there are a quarter-million that don't.
Is this really a problem? Or, since I'll agree that it is "a" problem, is it really the biggest problem? How about we focus on something that really is a big problem - like the fact that, if we simply collected all of the taxes that are due, the deficit would disappear without having to cut a single dollar of outlays?
