To be fair I think there has been a bizarre shift in the past decade where now the tail is wagging the dog; i.e., conservative media sets the agenda for the party to follow.
The real question is: who sets the agenda for conservative media then?
Think about it: this would explain the transition from governing into being nothing more than a party that complains, sells outrage, obstructs, launches hearings/investigations and indulges now in conspiracy theory.
That stuff is all great for TV--not so great if you're trying to get bridges fixed.
I disagree that they need Dems in power--when Bush was around they were simply a mouthpiece and all they needed was somebody to question him when they needed somebody to attack.
They just happened to hit paydirt with Obama because not only was he a Dem and not from the south but OMG he is black. So I'd say having Dems in power is better for business, but not essential.
What would really throw a wrench into the whole thing is if an independent took office. But of course that's not going to happen...
