Ethical human progress is a myth.
Take medicine. Do you know how many years we did unethical medical experimentation? The regular human rights abuses that fed scientific progress?
The whole history of modern politics (say 1600 onwards) is one of territorial conquest, exploitation of resources, abuse of indigenous or poor people, etc.
Capitalism has done truly great things, but it has never been especially ethical. It is, after all, based on the idea that people do not have equal right to resources.
And keep in mind this is an improvement over the more distant past.
As this applies to ISIS, my point is that these sort of atrocities are relative. I mean how many people have we killed? I admit that it doesn't usually involve stoning them, but that is really an aesthetic thing. I guess a guy bleeding to death with his legs blown off is nicer or something?
